Driven By Bacon

Hormel Foods in the USA have built a Bacon powered motorcycle! This has to be the coolest thing I have seen!

Ok so technically it's a Bacon grease powered motorcycle, but that is still pretty badass!

Check out their full website about the process of converting Bacon grease into bio-diesel, the full details of the bike build, the journey as they ride the motorcycle across the US as well as many other interesting stories.

This really is one of the coolest things I think I've posted here. Love this idea.
And it's a pretty cool looking bike too!

Good skills and keep it going!

Roasted Pork Belly?

A few Pigs warming up at a camp fire - perhaps getting a little close?
Those must be some big logs! Or these are Piglets getting ready to be Suckling Pig!

Baconfest Cape Town

Baconfest Cape Town is being held on Saturday the 29th November 2014 at La Bottega Restaurant, Buchanan square 160 Sir Lowry Rd, Cape Town. The event is divided into two sittings, afternoon and evening, where you can pig out to your hearts content, on all dishes presented including 2 x 500ml Boston Lager Draught beer for the price of R250 a ticket from Webtickets.

Hopefully this will be better than the f*@k show organised in May at the Wembley Tap.

With the benefit of seeing how not to arrange a Bacon Fest I think this one could be the real deal!
Also the fact that they have limited numbers to 300 people over two seating sessions make a big difference. Sure it is limited, but it will make the experience that much better for the people who get a chance to go.

So if you are in Cape Town on the 29th November then make a plan and get to this place!
And let me know how it turns out!

A Rampaging Australian Pig Drank 18 Beers And Got In A Fight With A Cow

So I stumbled upon this gem from Australia. It may be a year or so out of date, but I think it's worth sharing anyway!

Basically the story is that a wild Pig got into some campers beer stash and they estimated it drank about 18 beers. It then got stuck into the garbage for some food.
And then to top it all off it went looking for a fight with a cow!

It's Australia. You can't make this stuff up!

“In the middle of the night these people camping opposite us heard a noise, so they got their torch out and shone it on the pig and there he was, scrunching away at their cans,” said the visitor, who estimated that the pig had consumed 18 beers.

“Then he went and raided all the rubbish bags. There were some other people camped right on the river and they saw him being chased around their vehicle by a cow.” [Guardian]

Original story here.

Bacon & Cheese Explosion from Dirks Davenport

The wife came home with these the other day, from Dirks Butchery in Davenport.
The only info I can find for them is their Facebook page. So check them out.

Basically, for R43.00 (around US$3.00) you get two smallish Bacon Explosions!
That's Bacon wrapped around sausage meat, filled with cheese and all covered in BBQ sauce!

We've made these from scratch in the past but I have to say these are pretty incredible!

More pics below - check them out and if you're in Durban you've got to try Dirks - great meat and awesome Bacon Explosions!

Cape Town, Fish and Casino's - Sponsored post

The next time you're in Cape Town and have a hankering for some fish, the obvious place to go is the Cape Town Fish Market at the Grand West Casino. It is a vibrant, social restaurant with a fantastic Teppanyaki and Sushi bar.
They have some great weekly specials including half price Sushi on Tuesdays, and all you can eat Sushi Buffet on Thursdays!
At the Sushi Bar, tasty treats like California Rolls, Sashimi and fashion sandwiches roll past, on the first of its kind in South Africa, conveyor-belt.
The Cape Town Fish Market also has the option of purchasing lobster, muscles, prawns, oysters, and others, to be prepared for you in preferred portions to take home and cooked yourself.

Now if you happen to be at the Cape Town Fish Market at the Grand West Casino then you'll probably be needing somewhere to stay. This is where the Grand West comes into it's own. It is a full on entertainment complex including hotel! The complex includes more than 13 restaurants where you can get your fix of any other cuisine if fish is not what you're after. From Indian to Chinese, Steak Houses to Sea Food. The Grand West has them all!
The Grand West is the largest entertainment complex of its kind in South Africa. It offers around the clock entertainment in restaurants, bars, nightclubs and cinemas.

Or, not too far away there is also the Table Bay Hotel. The Table Bay Hotel is perfectly situated to take full advantage of Cape Town's most incredible sights and settings. Conveniently positioned against the stunning backdrop of the working harbour, Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, the Table Bay Hotel is in good proximity to the airport as well as Cape Town's best tourist attractions.

Bacon of the Month Club - South Africa

The latest thing to happen in South Africa is the Bacon of the Month club!

"Twelve months; twelve different bacons. From the obvious to the obscure. From the norm
to the fantastic. From Plain 'Don't Do Us No Flava's' to Green 'What the Seuss' Bacon.

All our bacons are developed and produced by Neil 'His Royal Porkness' Jewell.
Bacon of the Month Club memberships are limited and available on a first-come first-served basis. "

You can sign up for monthly deliveries for a year, 6 months, 3 months or just a single month to try it out. These range in price from R355 up to R2100.

For me at the moment, the only drawback for not signing up is that I cannot get it in my town of Durban. There is no collection point in Durban - pity as I would have definitely have signed up.

Perhaps in the future. So for now there is no review of the quality of their Bacon.

Bacon Fest Cape Town - a web review

I wasn't at Bacon Fest Cape Town on Friday night, so everything I have to say below is based on what I've read in comments on the Wembley Taps Facebook page.

First, I was very upset I would not be able to attend the Cape Town Bacon Fest. It was help at The Wembley Tap in Cape Town. All the hype on their Facebook page leading up to the event looked awesome!
Tickets sold out but possibly some available at the door.
Bacon beers that would be available.
Pictures of chocolate Bacon being made.

And then the reviews afterwards.
I was first made aware of something not being quite right when I saw a comment posted on the previous Bacon Fest Cape Town post. Someone posted, basically saying what a disapointment it was.

"This was the most disappointing thing ever!! For R150 you get a paper plate with little pork on, and one small bacon bear tasting!! There is nobody who explains to you how it works!! This is a rip off!!! The advert says you get 5 taster tickets and a pork plate!! I did not get what was promised to me!! "

Big M Bacon Milkshake - is not real

So I'm very late on the uptake and have just seen this image of the Big M (which is some sort of fantastic milkshake brand somewhere (more investigation leads me to believe it is in Oz)) which decided to make a Bacon flavoured version.
Instead they didn't. They just made the image and released it on April 1st.
Luckily I am slow on the uptake so have only seen this now!
But we surely can dream?

Everyone has an inner Bacon freak!

Thanks @AlishaNorris1 !

Cape Town Bacon Fest!

A celebration of everything Pork!
This has to be the first Bacon Fest I've heard of in this country!

So it'll be full of hipsters drinking craft beer ironically. So what...there will be Bacon and all sorts of other great goodies. And craft beer. Can't go wrong there.

It looks like it is on the 30th May 2014 at the Wembley Tap Public House in Gardens (where ever that may be - I don't know Cape Town).
So get there and be Porky!

Preparing your food safely - Sponsored post

When preparing Pork we need to be particularly careful about cleaning up after ourselves, and ensuring we clean our cutting board and hands properly.
The majority of food-borne illnesses are caused by food that was either incorrectly prepared or handled. The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that between 50% and 80% of food borne illnesses occur in your own home. Foods need to be heated for a long enough time period and at a temperature that will kill any harmful micro-organisms such as Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria.

Cooking in colour – Cast Iron Pots - Sponsored Post

eetrite’s cast iron has been a favourite in the kitchen for years. The heat distribution, heat retention and non-stick interior make it the preferred choice for so many dishes - especially those good old family recipes passed down from generation to generation. The eetrite quality is so great that you will pass your cast iron pieces down as well.
Love to cook, with the premium eetrite cast iron range.
Priced From :R419.00

Personally, I love the casserole dish which is perfect for a slow roasted Pork shoulder.
I also love the griddle pan which is fantastic for crispy fried Bacon!

China Cloning Pigs

Probably not new news, that China is doing something a little nefarious, but came across this article on the BBC about China cloning Pigs on an industrial scale.
A situation where a clone is carrying a cloned embryo of itself just somehow does not sit nicely with me.
